The Cake

Do you have a family birthday cake recipe?  We've used Fiona Cairns Family Chocolate Cake for our last few birthdays and I'm designating it our official celebration cake recipe - it's totally delicious!  J made E's birthday cake this year and used butter cream icing as E wanted her cake to be white, with strawberries all around the sides. She was most specific about this, so I think she must have seen a picture of something similar.  We put glitter on the top, obviously, and added paper bunting strung between wooden knitting needles.

  1. OMG you've done it again! Shown all of us incompetent cake bakers up! It looks amazing.. did you save me piece?! There is no way she is going to want anything less than this in future years. I bet J is really proud of his creation! xx (and yes the answer to your question, I am. Are you speaking?) x

    1. J is the master cake-maker in our house - the skills you discover when you become a parent eh? Not sure, hope to get an e-mail confirming what I'm doing! So glad you're going though!

  2. It's beautiful! I love the birthday cake "visions" that our kids have, and trying to make sure our creations match the imagined version.
I hope my Miss 4 wants a strawberry covered cake for her next one!
Happy Birthday to Miss E x

    1. I totally recommend it, it's really moist and delicious. We made 3 cake batches between myself and Kirsty so that we had 3 tiers each. I'm doing to do an egg post this week so you'll have some crafty inspiration and can get preparing!

  6. Wow, that is a cake!! Love the strawberries/glitter/all of it...

Everyone here likes different cakes, but that's ok as it means we all have our own birthday special (none that look quite as yummy as that though!)

    1. Oh, no I'm worried that my 'one cake fits all' policy might meet resistance when they're older now! Although, I love the idea of everyone having their own special cake!

  7. We do a special cake - although it is beginning to vary in our house too. The older ones like a victoria with chocolate icing & strawberries AND raspberries but Finn likes lemon cake or chocolate cake depending on the year! It gets compicated with 4...

  9. Wow! That is one beautiful cake. Love the effect the strawberries give - and paper bunting! I'm going to try that when my son turns three in March.

I always use the Nigella's buttermilk birthday cake recipe (it's in domestic goddess) as it carves up beautifully without crumbling and stays moist for days (handy if you need to make car/butterfly/peppa pig shaped cakes a couple of days before a party!). Nothing worse than stale birthday cake.
